Supported all the way August 30, 2016/0 Comments/in Topcon /by adminTony from Kodi Civil took time out from his busy day to write to us about his recent experience on-boarding Topcon GPS and 3D excavator machine control. Sydney-based Kodi Civil recently invested in a Topcon HiPer SR survey rover, having seen it used by Campbellfield City Council for kerb, gutter and road set-out on a road construction job Kodi was contracted for. “It was like magic,” Operations Director Tony Dimcevski said, adding “the capabilities of the unit were amazing. From set-out to spot levels, everything was so easy!” “That same day I called Position Partners for a consultation,” Tony continued. “The sales representative was very professional and explained the capabilities of the system on offer and I was so impressed I went ahead with buying a HiPer SR straight away.” When receiving his system, Tony was given basic operating training. “As part of the handover I was given a half day training session of the gear – it was a thorough run-through of both the basics as well as some of the more advanced features,” he said. Tony, who has a background in surveying, spent some time exploring the other features before deciding to take a Position Partners Campus training course. “My experience with the trainer on that day and to this day have been awesome. He has a vast knowledge of the Topcon products and his training abilities are first class,” Tony said. “I have also contacted the support centre with queries on task-specific issue, each and every time whoever I talk to has answered my query in a timely and professional manner.” Since purchasing the Topcon survey rover, Tony says “the amount of time and money saved on surveyors, waiting for surveyors and lost/damaged survey marks has been reduced dramatically.” Tony explained he has full confidence that the GPS is accurate within the required tolerances to complete a given project’s tasks, using simple daily checks when working on pits, drainage, base, kerb and gutter, retaining walls and various other structures. Four weeks ago, Kodi Civil made a second purchase, an excavator machine control system that the company will predominantly use as a 2D solution, with the option to upgrade it to 3D through hiring additional components. Tony described the solution as “an amazing system, where a machine operator can undertake various required tasks with unbelievable ease and efficiency,” He added: “the Position Partners team that fitted the unit where quick and did an immaculate job on site. For a recent job, Kodi Civil required 3D positioning so the company hired the additional components. “A technician then came out to calibrate the system and demonstrate its capabilities,” he added. “As usual he was easy to understand and showed me everything I needed to know. The following day another technical specialist arrived on site to talk us through using the solution in 2D, which is what we’ll use the system for most. His ability to explain the system was again, second to none. There was a technical problem with the unit which he was able to sort out there and then.” Tony concluded by saying “I would like to commend the Position Partners team on extraordinary service and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anybody in the industry. I have been in the civil works industry for 25 years and the amount of time and effort we have saved, the accuracy we have been completing the works with and the ease we have been getting the job done, has been amazing.” http://staging.creativdigital.com.au/position-partners/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/logo_header.png 0 0 admin http://staging.creativdigital.com.au/position-partners/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/logo_header.png admin2016-08-30 00:00:002016-08-30 00:00:00Supported all the way
Next Generation Paving at Singapore Airport August 30, 2016/0 Comments/in Topcon /by admin Position Partners pools expertise to install Topcon’s new SmoothRide paving solutions for Changi airport’s third runway Singapore’s Changi Airport is one of the world’s biggest and busiest airports, a major gateway to and from Asia. In the coming years, the airport is set to double in size with the addition of a third runway and two additional terminals (T4 and T5), with T4 planned for completion in 2017. By 2015, the airport is planned to cater for a staggering 135 million passengers every year. The airport’s third runway entails extending and upgrading an existing military runway to the southeast of the airport, to enable its use for larger passenger aircraft. Joint venture Samsung C&T-Koh Brothers has the contract for the first phase of this project, which includes paving, drainage, security fencing, perimeter roads, mechanical and electrical works and other support services. United has the sub-contract for paving works on the new runway and the team has selected Topcon’s new SmoothRide start to finish paving automation solutions to increase productivity and ensure accuracy at every stage. This includes Topcon’s Millimetre GPS solution on four paving systems, Topcon C-63 intelligent compaction solution for two compactors and SmoothRide surface profiling and scanning technology for two SAS vehicles. As the first installation of Topcon’s new SmoothRide solution in Asia Pacific, local Topcon machine control dealer Position Partners pooled its expertise from the company’s Singapore and Indonesia branches, along with representatives from Brisbane and Sydney in Australia, to ensure the system was set for success from the first pass. Mike Forrest, Managing Director of Position Partners’ Singapore branch, said the team worked effectively to ensure the installations and testing were done as efficiently as possible. “Led by Jeff Bratton [Australia Technical Support], the team showed a level of professionalism and team work, the like of which I have never before encountered in over 30 years in the industry,” he said. Graeme Casen works for Position Partners Indonesia branch and assisted with the machine installs, while Eng Ming, based in the company’s Brisbane office and with extensive experience in paving automation, gained invaluable experience on the new system. Hanif Santoso from the Indonesian office assisted the team and gained training to be able to lead the engineering aspects of future installations. The job was not without its challenges, as Jeff explained there were a few instances where a bit of lateral thinking was required: “Unbeknown to us before we began, tow bars are actually illegal in Singapore, which made installing the RD-M1 surface scanning system a little tricky given it’s designed to fit to a tow bar,” he said. “A few of the weld-on components were also missing from the kits, which meant we needed to make them on site using scrap metal, but the systems were installed successfully and the new system is working perfectly,” he added. Once installation was complete, the team conducted on-site training on the setup and user of the mmGPS paving system, as well as the survey rovers for collecting as-built data. http://staging.creativdigital.com.au/position-partners/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/logo_header.png 0 0 admin http://staging.creativdigital.com.au/position-partners/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/logo_header.png admin2016-08-30 00:00:002016-08-30 00:00:00Next Generation Paving at Singapore Airport
We’re very proud of our marketing assistant Cynthia! August 26, 2016/0 Comments/in Position Partners /by adminCynthia Papadopolous joined Position Partners thanks to disability employment agency Wise Employment. Originally employed to help with some marketing admin such as direct mail and brochure printing, Cynthia has taken on more responsibility in recent months and is using her training in graphic design to put together brochures, flyers, digital advertising and much more. We are very proud to have Cynthia as part of our team and she is a great asset. Wise Employment recently put together the article below to celebrate Cynthia’s success: Cynthia flourishes in first job as graphic designer despite anxiety Having a job and working in a team has helped Cynthia to better manage her anxiety both in and out of the workplace. Before she came to WISE Employment Parramatta in late 2015, Cynthia’s anxiety had formed a seemingly insurmountable barrier to the working world. She was eager to find work, but for three long years her search for employment as a graphic designer was plagued by self doubt. Cynthia and her WISE Consultant worked together to develop her resume and began investigating possible roles that would gel with her interest and skills. Local employer Gina Velde, Marketing Communications Manager at Position Partners, had just such a role and after a successful interview it was all Cynthia’s. Fast forward six months and Cynthia is doing well at work, building her skills and contributing to the creative projects the team delivers. “In the six months Cynthia has been with us we have extended her days and responsibilities so that she is doing more of what she enjoys and developing in her career,” said Gina. “She’s always very positive and has a can-do attitude. It’s been great to watch her develop in her role,” she added. Cynthia said that working has helped her confidence and made it easier to talk to new people. “Now that I’ve got a job and am working in a team I feel less anxious in other situations. I’m a bit more outgoing and chatty, and I think I’m happier too,” she said. Her Mum Helen agrees, saying she’s seen big changes in Cynthia since she started at Position Partners. “Cynthia used to be very shy but now she’s coming out of her shell, she talks more and shares her opinion. By going to work and mixing with other people she’s learning new social skills. I’m very happy for her,” said Helen. http://staging.creativdigital.com.au/position-partners/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/logo_header.png 0 0 admin http://staging.creativdigital.com.au/position-partners/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/logo_header.png admin2016-08-26 00:00:002016-08-26 00:00:00We're very proud of our marketing assistant Cynthia!

Do you know the true cost of your survey equipment? August 8, 2016/0 Comments/in Position Partners /by admin I’ve been providing hardware solutions to the geospatial industry for most of my career and there has been a consistent complaint from end users about unscheduled costs for the upkeep of instrumentation. It’s usually expressed in the high cost of replacements parts like batteries and cables, or sometimes the loss of income during a service or repair. The net cost of these ongoing expenses, plus the purchase price, amounts to the total cost of ownership. Want to know how to fix the total cost of ownership for up to five years? Like good car service agreements, some survey equipment suppliers include a certain amount of service costs in a maintenance package, although most fall short of offering a complete wear and tear solution. The pressure and demands on a surveyor are ever increasing. You need to concentrate on your job and your surveying equipment needs to be like a ninja, silent, efficient and precise. Stay with me on this. Cost of uptime Even with good care things can just break or fault. Regardless of brand, batteries die, cables break, and electrical equipment can fault. Whereas a standard maintenance agreement would draw the line at the instrument itself, a comprehensive plan takes the unknown costs out of the equation and extends to everything in the box. When you subscribe to one of our plans, If your battery goes flat, it gets replaced free of charge. If your UHF antenna is faulty, it too is fixed at no cost. If anything else faults from normal wear and tear, it’s covered. Just as Kochie keeps reminding small businesses and families to demand more from the banks, surveyors should get better support from their suppliers, and thats exactly what we’ve done! Imagine starting your new survey business and being able to lock in your costs for up to 5 years. You can finance the complete solution over a 5 year term and know exactly what your costs are to establish your competitive rates and keep your cash flowing to more important things……like a fishing boat! Cost of downtime Survey equipment is no different to people, sometimes they get sick. And just like being sick and out of the field, downtime on survey hardware will cost you money…..not anymore! When one ninja falls another takes its place, silent, precise efficient. Our maintenance plan includes no change loan equipment in the unlikely event of any hardware failure. Getting your equipment serviced and calibrated every year is important to keep you as productive and your results as precise as possible. The service is of course included in a good maintenance contract and loan equipment is always provided for all scheduled services. Our comprehensive maintenance agreements mean the hardware is completely covered. The only time you’ll need to put your hand in your pocket is if you leave it on the tray and drive off…..even then your insurance will step in. The cost of this hassle-free, no surprises plan? A lot less than you would expect. Just as having your equipment running keeps you more productive, having the majority of customer equipment regularly serviced keeps our productivity up too. Planning for the unexpected means we are faster and more efficient at handling those instances, which keeps our costs down too. Don’t accept those surprise costs as part and parcel of owning surveying gear. Partner with us and you can and should get a better deal that wears the unexpected failures and keeps you out in the field doing what you do best, surveying. Support for ever more complex survey technology has never been more important. Is your business well supported? July 27, 2016/0 Comments/in Position Partners /by admin I can go on and on about Moore’s law but we see it in action every day. This year’s TV is bigger but thinner and has a higher resolution than the one you bought last year. It also connects to the internet, has cameras, can record TV and you can direct it with hand signals. Even your dog can use it if he’s good with his paws. The surveying industry is no different, in fact the technological advancements are happening so fast it’s can be hard for the suppliers to keep up to speed. So how can you the end user be expected to when you have your day job to worry about? The simple answer is, you shouldn’t have to. A good partnership between a supplier and customer is one of trust and respect. We should be trusted to make sure you are abreast of the latest workflows and technology advancements. And in turn respect the way you need to work, listen to the challenges you face and assist you wherever possible to achieve your deliverables…..all with a smile. A big part of this ongoing partnership is the ability to support you in the field to maximise your workflows and mitigate any downtime. You are the surveyor and know what you need to do but we in turn are the experts on the software and can guide you to get the most out of it. Your supplier is also the connection between what world-leading technology can do and how to maximise its use in the local market. Australia’s remoteness from the three big manufacturers’ US and European headquarters, along with its size and the fact it’s very easy to get a long way from anywhere quickly, makes getting support when you need it a challenge. So with all these new advances in technology that you’re seeing both at home and in the field on your survey equipment, how are we leveraging their power with improved support capabilities? Phone and e-mail support is so 1999, we all expect faster and more helpful help than “switch it off and switch it on again.” For your survey tools, if you want next generation support, you need to get on board with telematics. Tokara Link is one such solution and the only one that was developed in Australia to perform in harmony with our unique quirks, extreme conditions and local industry. Since its release it has won plenty of praise, including the 2013 Technology Release of the Year at the Earthmover and Civil Contractor Awards. So what is it? Tokara Link is a real time, remote link to your field equipment such as a survey field tablet or a machine. Using a simple web interface and with your chosen support plan, our qualified technicians can remotely access the field tablet to view & control your screen, change settings, update firmware and troubleshoot in minutes. Not only is Tokara Link an award-winning support tool to keep you smiling, but it can also be leveraged as a project-connected device for any Topcon managed project. With your permission, this connects your equipment to the project servers and enables data managers to deploy new design updates at the touch of a button. Let’s put this into practice. You have Tokara Link and a support plan on your new FC-5000 field tablet. Your new surveyor who hasn’t used Topcon before wants to do a GPS localisation but isn’t confident. Rather than a best guess he or she calls our support line, we initiate the Tokara Link session, see the screen live in the support centre. We use the map view, turn on the background Bing maps, check the control is loaded in the job then guide the surveyor through the process in real time on the real job with a very real result. No problems, no downtime, no rework – sounds like the definition of productivity to me! To recap: As technology advances it can become harder to keep up with the current trends and workflows Your geospatial supplier should be more than just a warehouse – see them as your partner for the life of the equipment (and beyond!) Technology advances and the internet of things (IoT) enables companies like Position Partners to develop industry & region specific platforms to support that partnership and pioneer better ways to increase productivity Article by: Cameron Waters – National Product Manager – Geospatial http://staging.creativdigital.com.au/position-partners/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/logo_header.png 0 0 admin http://staging.creativdigital.com.au/position-partners/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/logo_header.png admin2016-07-27 00:00:002016-07-27 00:00:00Support for ever more complex survey technology has never been more important. 5 reasons to upgrade your data collector to a survey tablet July 20, 2016/0 Comments/in Position Partners /by admin If someone handed you a Nokkia 5110 to run your business you would likely laugh them out of the room…..after playing snake for a few minutes. The same could also be said for today’s smart phone, if it doesn’t have a data plan then it’s just a phone and not very smart at all, certainly not smart enough to help run your business. I could even go one step further and suggest that if your data isn’t centrally stored and accessible remotely then you might as well keep playing snake on the 5110. So why do I still see so many projects and surveyors using old data collectors when we are all using smartphones in our daily lives? The mobile computing market has had some big changes that have directly affected the surveying and construction industry in a very positive way. In terms of point positioning you can only store points as fast as you can walk and whilst improvements to GNSS and robotic total station equipment do make incremental improvements, the vast amount of productivity is really achieved through the field controller and software. The good news is that these have the lowest impact to your budget and highest impact to your productivity. So here is why I think you should upgrade you survey controller today. 1. Performance Gone are the days when you had small project files or the time to disseminate what you need for your work. Often the project file is the entire job and your work needs to be done yesterday. This is where the power of a full-featured Windows tablet comes into its own, handling huge files at lightning speed. The extra grunt also allows software developers to look at 3D and a range of other visualisation features to help you make decisions in the field. 2. Flexibility The old style data collectors are good for only one thing, collecting or setting out data. The same is not true for the modern tablet. These are consumer level devices and the good ones will come standard with Windows 10. This mean you can run your field software, office processing, word processing, spreadsheets, accounting, time sheets….should I keep going…..it’s likely more powerful than the computer you’re reading this on. Don’t pigeon hole the device for a single purpose, use it for the complete end to end management of your business and maximise your investment by making it your all-in-one survey and business computer. 3. Mobility Just like a smartphone without a data plan, a survey tablet without a data plan isn’t very smart. If you’re not managing data remotely, getting support remotely, managing people remotely then I’m afraid you simply won’t be in business for too much longer. People’s time is likely the biggest cost in your business and keeping them productive is essential to managing that cost. The right data, accessed remotely from a common location is a key to this success and cloud computing has opened the door for companies of all sizes to have instantly deployable productivity applications to manage all aspects of the business. 4. Gen-Y demands it, and your business needs them This might throw some of you but Gen Y’s primary motivation for choosing an employer won’t be money……..sounds crazy but stay with me. Technology is a key factor in their choice. If you’re taking advantage of cloud productivity on a modern survey tablet then you’re far more likely to attract and keep the best of the next generation. The same can’t be said if you hand them a Set-2 with a field book and pencil! 5. Price The survey market and the consumer market have finally met and the result is the survey tablet. Unlike the old SDR33s, TDS Rangers and Juniper Allegros, the modern tablets are used by a huge range of markets, reducing manufacturing unit costs and passing the savings onto end users. A survey tablet with all the above advantages is still around $1,500-$2,500 less than a ‘data collector’ equivalent. Call one of our offices today on your Cloud-connected smartphone and we’ll improve your surveying experience just like the smartphone has for the rest of your life…..1300 867 266 7 Must have features for a new survey tablet – click here Article by: Cameron Waters – National Product Manager – Geospatial http://staging.creativdigital.com.au/position-partners/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/logo_header.png 0 0 admin http://staging.creativdigital.com.au/position-partners/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/logo_header.png admin2016-07-20 00:00:002016-07-20 00:00:005 reasons to upgrade your data collector to a survey tablet
7 Must have features for a new survey tablet July 20, 2016/0 Comments/in Position Partners /by admin Now that you’ve made the easy decision to upgrade your old data collector to a modern tablet, what should you look for in a tablet to get the best bang for your buck? Not all tablets are the same, the surveying profession has unique requirements and sometimes it’s the small things that can make a big difference. Here are my top 7 features to get the most from your upgrade. 1. Battery Life Intel has made powerful fanless processors that have very low power consumption. However, the larger screen format of the tablet has a big impact on the battery life. A typical survey day would also include the Bluetooth and modem running full time, which further impacts the battery life. I wouldn’t recommend buying anything less than a 10 hour spec on the brochure, preferably 15 hours. Most manufactures will give the best case scenario which means most options turned off. If you have any doubt about the real world running time, ask for a trial or demo, the truth will come out pretty quickly. I’d also insist on a hot swappable battery system if ever you do need to swap a battery over. 2. Operating system I’ve been using windows 10 on a tablet for some months now and after some initial pain I could never go back. Windows 10 has been designed specifically for the touchscreen platform and will enhance your tablet experience. 3. Screen that works in the sun & rain There are a lot of funky words manufactures use to explain how good they are outdoors. My advice, don’t buy anything until you can view it in person both in the sun and also in the rain. Some capacitive screens simply won’t work in a light shower, which would put a serious damper (!) on your productivity. 4. Survey Configurations There are certain devices a tablet needs for the world of surveying and construction that may not be applicable to the general consumer market. I have the luxury of siting on both the user side and the software development side of the fence so I get a good glimpse into the future of feature development in survey software. Any tablet you purchase today will certainly need: Class 1.5 long range Bluetooth GPS and Glonass integrated positioning chip WiFi 4G modem Camera, preferably front and rear The only other legacy option you may want to consider is a serial port but my advice would be to use a serial to USB adapter. 5. Accessories It’s all well and good grabbing the latest tablet from JB HI-FI but if you can’t attach it on a survey pole or in the car then it’s just a paperweight. You need a tablet that has a strong list of complimentary accessories including Pole bracket Car kit Desktop docking station, so you can connect to a second larger screen, mouse and keyboard. Carry case Stylus and lanyard 6. Protection from the elements Your field tablet needs to work in some pretty rough conditions in Australia. There is no way you would pull your laptop out in the field conditions you work in but your tablet won’t get the luxury of a site office for protection. If it’s not IP rated then it’s not worth buying! The IP rating refers to the solid particle & liquid ingress protection resistance. Any tablet needs a 6 for the first digit making it dust tight and a 5 or higher, preferably 6, on the second digit indicating its protection ranking from water jets. 7. Buttons Almost all software today is made with touchscreens in mind. Survey software in particular has come a long way with feature code lists and quick coding options so you have little need for the keyboard.
